Concrete Cooling for LNG, Energy & Industrial Projects

Tank foundations, process structures, and heavy equipment bases. The placements are thick, the specifications are strict, and the outage window will not move.

LNG and cryogenic terminals

LNG storage tanks sit on some of the largest mass concrete placements in industrial construction. Foundation slabs and ring beams for full-containment tanks are thick by necessity, heavily reinforced, and placed under specifications that treat thermal cracking as a containment risk rather than a cosmetic one.

The Gulf Coast concentration of export terminals means much of this work happens in Louisiana and Texas, in a climate where placement temperature is a problem for most of the construction year. That combination, the thickest sections and the hottest conditions, is the hardest version of this problem and the one most likely to need nitrogen rather than ice.

Beyond the tanks themselves: process foundations, pipe rack bases, marine structures, and the equipment plinths that carry compressors and pumps.

Refining and petrochemical

Refinery and chemical plant work brings a different pressure. Much of the concrete goes in during a turnaround, when the unit is down and every day of the outage is costing real money. The placement window is fixed before anyone looks at the forecast.

Typical placements are heavy equipment foundations, compressor and pump bases, vessel and column foundations, pipe rack footings, and containment structures. Many are thick enough to carry peak temperature limits, and nearly all of them are on the critical path of a schedule that was set months earlier.

Turnaround work is where the cost comparison changes shape. Cooling is never the expensive line on a turnaround. The expensive line is the extra day of downtime if a placement fails inspection or slips.

Power generation and renewables

  • Wind turbine foundations. Large continuous placements, usually well into mass concrete territory, and often in remote locations with a long haul from the nearest batch plant. Long hauls in hot conditions reheat a load, which frequently pushes cooling to the point of placement rather than the plant.
  • Substation and transmission foundations. Dimensionally critical, and increasingly the long-lead item on projects gated by grid interconnection.
  • Generating station foundations. Turbine pedestals and heavy equipment bases where thermal cracking is a serviceability problem for the life of the plant.
  • Battery storage and solar. Large repetitive placements across a wide footprint, on schedules driven by interconnection dates.

Why these projects specify so tightly

Industrial owners write thermal control requirements because the consequences land on them, not on the contractor, and they land years later. A cracked foundation under a compressor is not a warranty conversation, it is an unplanned outage. A containment structure with a durability defect is a regulatory problem.

So the specifications tend to include a maximum placement temperature, a peak internal temperature limit, a core-to-surface differential limit, and a requirement to document all three. That documentation requirement is worth taking seriously at bid time, because it is the part contractors most often underestimate.
